Frances Leighton Lawler collection of Vachel Lindsay, 1879-1931.

The Frances Lieghton Lawler Collection of Vachel Lindsay ephemera consists of a seven page Vachel Lindsay manuscript of "The Wrecks of the Galleons of Spain" with corrections and marginal notes; correspondence between Vachel Lindsay and Sarah K. Smith, Frances Leighton, and three letters from Olive Lindsay Wakefield to Frances Leighton. In addition, the papers contain news clippings about Vachel Lindsay and family, his death, and the restoration of his house in Springfield, Illinois. Clippings of his poem "Virginia" signed to Frances Leighton and a carbon copy of a part of Governor Stevenson's Spokane Speech concerning Lindsay are also included as well as a small publication entitled "Rhymes to be traded for bread: being new verses" by Vachel Lindsay.

Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was born in Springfield, IL. He studied in Ohio, Chicago, and New York and acquired a reputation as a poet and lecturer. Lindsay became famous for his walk from Springfield, IL to New Mexico in 1912, and for an unusual method of writing poetry. In 1924 he arrived in Spokane where he worked as a columnist for the "Spokesman-Review". He returned to Springfield in 1929, and at the time of his death was a major figure in American poetry.
